PIN Requirement for Mobile Devices connecting to VSC Email

In an effort to continually improve security of your information, the Vermont State Colleges (VSC) will be implementing a PIN requirement for all mobile devices connecting to VSC email accounts. This includes students, faculty, staff, alumni, and retired employees.

What is happening?

When adding your VSC email to your mobile phone, tablet, etc. or if you already have this configured, you will be required to enable a simple PIN to secure your device. If you already have configured a four-digit numeric PIN OR a four-character or more alphanumeric password on your device, you will not be required to enable it again or change it.

Why is this happening?

If you were to lose your device, anyone could access your VSC email account and your information. The PIN is one way to mitigate some of the risks associated with accessing your email from a mobile device.

When is this happening? 

On Wednesday April 18th 2018 at approximately 9am, the requirement will be enabled. It will take some time to propagate to all the devices.

What type of PIN will be required?

One of the following:
Four-digit numeric PIN
Pattern
Fingerprint
or any combination of these.

What else do I need to know?

The requirement will not include automatically wiping the devices for too many incorrect PIN attempts, you will not be required to change your PIN on a regular basis, and no encryption will be required.

What if I remove my VSC email from my device? Can I remove the PIN?

Yes, but it is still a good practice to have a PIN on your device in case you lose it.
